Aluminium is a lightweight, corrosion-resistant metal first produced commercially during the nineteenth century. Initially considered a luxury material due to its rarity, aluminium became increasingly popular during the late Victorian, Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods for lighting, furniture, decorative objects and architectural features. Its strength, durability and clean appearance made it especially suited to modernist and industrial design.
