A Cast Iron Fireback is a heavy decorative iron panel positioned against the rear wall of a fireplace to protect the masonry from heat while reflecting warmth back into the room. Originating in the fifteenth century and becoming especially popular during the Georgian and Victorian periods, firebacks often feature coats of arms, royal cyphers, mythological scenes, floral motifs or family crests cast in relief. Antique cast iron firebacks remain highly sought after for both their practical function and their architectural presence within period fireplaces.
