Chinoiserie

Chinoiserie is a European decorative style inspired by Chinese art, architecture and design, which flourished during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Characterised by lacquered surfaces, pagodas, exotic landscapes, birds, flowers and oriental figures, chinoiserie appeared on furniture, wallpaper, ceramics, mirrors and decorative objects. Popular throughout the Georgian period, it reflected Europe\'s fascination with Asian craftsmanship and remains highly collectable today. *Related Terms*\ Japanning, Lacquer, Oriental Furniture, Pagoda, Rococo, Tea Trade, Vernis Martin.
