Distressed Finish

A Distressed Finish is a decorative surface treatment designed to replicate the appearance of natural age and wear through techniques such as rubbing back, layering paint or artificially creating surface imperfections. While genuine antique furniture develops an authentic patina over decades of use, distressed finishes are commonly applied to modern furniture to create a period-inspired appearance. Collectors generally distinguish between naturally aged surfaces and intentionally distressed finishes. *Related Terms*\ Artificial Ageing, Painted Furniture, Patina, Shabby Chic, Surface Finish.
