Galuchat, more commonly known as Shagreen, is a luxurious material traditionally made from the skin of stingrays or sharks, recognised for its distinctive pebbled texture and exceptional durability. Popularised in eighteenth-century France by master craftsman Jean-Claude Galluchat, shagreen was used to decorate fine furniture, boxes, writing accessories and luxury objects. Antique shagreen pieces remain highly prized for their tactile beauty and refined craftsmanship.
