An impressive and highly decorative pair of 19th-century Flemish Gothic brass pricket candlesticks, distinguished by their architectural multi-baluster stems, pierced castellated candle pans and wonderfully characterful lion-form feet.
Recently acquired in Belgium, the pair draw directly upon the tradition of much earlier Netherlandish ecclesiastical brasswork, reinterpreting medieval forms on a substantial and beautifully balanced scale.
Each candlestick stands upon a broad circular base supported by three cast brass lions. These are particularly appealing details: rather than simple paw feet, each support takes the form of a stylised seated lion with raised head and an incised flowing mane, giving the bases a strong sculptural quality.
Above, the stems rise through a succession of turned and moulded sections, alternating slender columns with broad disc-shaped knops and stepped collars. This repeated architectural treatment gives the pair their striking vertical rhythm while retaining an elegant overall proportion.
At the top of each stem sits a substantial circular candle pan surrounded by a pierced Gothic gallery. Small quatrefoil-like openings decorate the gallery, while its raised, castellated edge recalls the turreted architecture of medieval churches and fortifications.
A tall tapering brass pricket rises from the centre of each pan, designed to secure a substantial candle.
At 43 cm high, the pair have considerable presence without being overwhelmingly large, making them particularly suited to a chimneypiece, console table, substantial dining table or country-house interior.
The three lion supports beneath each candlestick are one of their most distinctive features.
Each animal is individually cast with a stylised raised head, pronounced muzzle and finely incised mane. The lions project from beneath the circular bases to create a tripod arrangement, providing both stability and considerable decorative character.
Their use deliberately recalls the zoomorphic supports found on much earlier Netherlandish metalwork and gives the pair an unmistakably Gothic appearance.
Presented in very good antique condition, with wear consistent with age and previous use.
The brass retains a bright polished surface protected by a clear lacquer coating. There is minor localised bubbling and deterioration to the lacquer in one or two areas, together with occasional light scratches, rubbing and surface marks. This is not particularly noticeable when displayed and does not detract from the overall appearance of the pair.
Areas of darker historic oxidation and surface deposits remain within recessed areas and to the undersides.
The lacquer has been left intact rather than removed. Should a future owner wish to return the candlesticks to an unlacquered finish, the existing coating could be professionally removed and the underlying brass polished.
There are minor variations and irregularities associated with age and manufacture. The pierced galleries remain well defined, both substantial prickets are present, and the six distinctive lion-form supports retain good definition.
Both candlesticks stand well and present beautifully together.
