THE SHACKLETON FOX ENCYCLOPAEDIA

John Rose

John Rose was an English porcelain manufacturer who founded the Coalport porcelain works in Shropshire in the late eighteenth century, on the banks of the River Severn near Ironbridge. Having trained at the nearby Caughley factory, he established his own business and went on to acquire Caughley itself, combining the two operations at Coalport.

Under Rose the Coalport factory became one of the leading producers of English porcelain in the early nineteenth century, making tea and dessert services, vases and ornamental wares in a translucent body, later developed towards bone china. The firm also acquired moulds and stock from the Welsh factories at Swansea and Nantgarw, and employed some of their painters. Coalport is known for richly gilded wares, finely painted flowers and landscapes, and, from the 1820s, flower-encrusted pieces in the style often called Coalbrookdale. Wares marked John Rose & Co. or with variations of the Coalport name are sought by collectors, though much early production is unmarked and is attributed through pattern numbers, shapes and decoration. The Coalport name continued long after Rose's death, the factory eventually moving to Stoke-on-Trent in the twentieth century.
