Burnishing is the process of polishing or compressing a surface using friction to create a smooth, lustrous finish without removing significant material. Traditionally employed on metals, gilding, leather and wood finishes, burnishing enhances appearance while preserving surface detail. In antique restoration, careful burnishing can revive original finishes, although excessive treatment may alter historic surfaces and should be undertaken with restraint.
