Carolean refers to the period and style associated with the reign of King Charles II of England (1660--1685) following the Restoration of the monarchy. Carolean furniture is characterised by bold proportions, turned legs, carved stretchers, cane backs, rich oak and walnut timbers, and strong Dutch and Flemish influences. The style represents a significant transition from the austerity of the Cromwellian period to the more elaborate Baroque designs that followed. Original Carolean pieces are highly prized for their craftsmanship, historical significance and robust elegance.
