A Dog Grate is a type of open fireplace grate supported by a pair of firedogs or andirons, designed to hold burning logs above the hearth for improved airflow and more efficient combustion. Popular from the seventeenth century onwards, dog grates were commonly crafted in cast iron, wrought iron or brass and often featured decorative front bars and finials. Antique examples remain highly sought after for both period restorations and decorative interiors. *Related Terms*\ Andirons, Fireplace, Fire Basket, Fire Grate, Firedogs, Hearth.
