19th Century Neoclassical Oil Painting of Dancing Nymphs, Gilt Greek Key Frame

An enchanting 19th-century Neoclassical oil painting on panel featuring four exquisite, individually rendered dancing nymphs or maenads, set against a deep, dramatic black ground. Housed in a magnificent, heavy giltwood frame carved with a continuous Greek key (meander) border, this piece captures the height of late-18th and 19th-century classical revival taste.

The composition is divided into a four-quadrant grid by elegant, thin gilt border lines, each panel showcasing a distinct, floating female figure captured in fluid, ethereal motion:

Top Left Quadrant: A dynamic, dancing nymph in a billowing rose-pink gown, gracefully balancing a woven basket of fresh flora and greenery upon her head while gesturing into the dark void.

Top Right Quadrant: A partially draped, semi-clad classical beauty cast in warm golden tones, pulling a translucent veil over her head while carrying an elegant shallow classical basin or patera.

Bottom Left Quadrant: A beautifully costumed figure in a classical green and terracotta tunic, turning mid-stride to carry an ornate golden ewer and a shallow dish filled with offerings.

Bottom Right Quadrant: An elegantly bundled figure wrapped tightly in a wind-swept, ochre-yellow cloak and hood, her form conveying swift, swirling movement against the stark background.

The high-contrast aesthetic directly mirrors the famous Roman wall frescoes discovered at Pompeii and Herculaneum, which frequently depicted floating deities and dancers isolated against saturated black or red backdrops. By isolating these fluid, classically inspired forms against a dark field and enclosing them in an architectural frame, the artwork successfully bridges traditional historicism with a striking, graphic modern appeal.

History & Provenance

Origin: Paris, France (with clear institutional framing provenance).

Period: 19th Century (Circa 1860–1880).

Style: Neoclassical Revival / Pompeiian Style.

Provenance: The reverse of the panel bears a highly desirable, pristine 19th-century Parisian trade label from the celebrated workshop "P. Hombert Fils, Doreur Encadreur" located at 37, Rue Victor Massé, Paris (noting its historical location as the Ancienne rue de Laval). Hombert Fils were renowned high-end specialists in luxury gold, black, and gold-and-black framing (Cadres Dorés, et Noir et Or), proving this piece was professionally framed and handled by elite 19th-century Parisian artisans.

Materials & Production Method

Medium: Fine oil on architectural composition panel or artist's board.

Frame: Outstanding period carved wood and gesso frame, fully water-gilded. The frame features a deep, crisply rendered Greek Key (Meander) design, which carries a beautiful, authentic red bole under-reflection bleeding through the aged gold leaf.

Dealers Comments

"This piece is an absolute masterclass in Neoclassical decorative power. The sheer quality of the Parisian framing by P. Hombert Fils cannot be overstated—the frame alone is an exceptional object of desire, with that wonderful red bole showing through the gilding. What makes the painting itself so successful is the lightness of touch in the nymphs' drapery; they seem to genuinely float on the black ground. It's a highly sophisticated nod to the Grand Tour taste that functions beautifully as a singular, commanding focal point in a contemporary interior."

Condition Report

Painting: The painted surface is in very good antique condition. The black ground shows a beautifully aged, stable surface with very minor, light surface dust and faint handling marks consistent with age. The figures themselves remain wonderfully vibrant with no significant paint loss or restoration noted.

Frame: The substantial giltwood Greek key frame is structurally sound and retains its magnificent original water gilding. It shows a glorious, authentic patina with minor historical rubbing to the high points, exposing the red bole beneath, and a few insignificant, stable hairline cracks to the gesso corners as expected.

Reverse: The backing paper is partially torn at the edges, intentionally preserved to protect the exceptional, fully legible French framer's label. It has been fitted with a secure modern hanging wire and is ready to display.
