A striking and architecturally significant pair of early 20th-century brass candlesticks, attributed to the renowned Margaret Gilmour School in Glasgow. Constructed from hand-worked brass, these pieces embody the "honesty of materials" and structural integrity that defined the Glasgow Style of the Arts & Crafts movement.
The design features:
Architectural Form: Twin upright supports rise from a weighted rectangular base, terminating in stylized, integrated candle sockets. The silhouette is reminiscent of the linear, vertical aesthetic championed by the "Glasgow Four."
The "B" Monogram: Each candlestick features an applied brass plaque with a repoussé letter "B." This suggests a specific commission for a chapel, school, or institution—adding a layer of historical intrigue and provenance.
Hand-Crafted Detail: The visible riveted joints are a hallmark of Gilmour School metalwork, where the construction process was celebrated as a decorative element rather than hidden.
Original Surface: The brass has been left in its original state, possessing a soft, mellow patina and gentle toning that can only be achieved through age.
Dealer’s Comment
An exceptionally strong and architectural pair, with a quiet confidence that sits perfectly within both Arts & Crafts and contemporary interiors. The attribution to the Margaret Gilmour School is compelling, and the presence of the applied letter adds intrigue and individuality. Honest, untouched, and increasingly difficult to find in matched pairs.
In very good condition, consistent with age and use.
The brass surfaces display an attractive, original patina with light surface wear, minor marks, and gentle toning throughout. All elements are structurally sound, with riveted joints secure and stable. No signs of later polishing, repair, or restoration. Overall, a clean and honest pair that presents exceptionally well.
