An exceptional and rare survival from the late 16th century, this table lamp was originally crafted as a sacred reliquary. Hand-carved from solid timber, the architectural form features a central niche flanked by two guardian cherubim and is supported by a pair of bold, scrolling lion-claw feet.
The piece exhibits a magnificent, deep patina and remains of original gesso and gilding, telling a 450-year story of liturgical use. Historically treated for inactive woodworm and now sympathetically converted for modern lighting, this lamp bridges the gap between the Renaissance and the 21st century. It is a profound "object of virtue" that adds a sense of ancient gravitas to a library, study, or grand hallway.
This antique 16th century carved wood reliquary table lamp is in good antique condition. Please see the provided pictures for details.
The wood has been treated for historic woodworm holes, which are inactive. This treatment ensures the longevity and durability of this exquisite lamp.
Fully rewired to ensure optimal performance. The lamp includes a 3-core braided fabric cable, lamp holder, and a UK 3-pin plug. Additionally, it has undergone a Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) inspection, guaranteeing its safety and compliance with electrical standards.
