An elegant antique wrought iron fireguard featuring elaborate symmetrical scrollwork, a finely woven metal mesh screen and a beautifully shaped ornamental crest. With its flowing decorative ironwork and substantial proportions, this distinctive fireside piece brings architectural character to traditional fireplaces and country house interiors.
The fireguard displays an intricate arrangement of sweeping curves, tightly coiled scrolls and small spherical embellishments, creating a balanced and highly decorative composition. Its design reflects the influence of Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau ironwork, where flowing forms and ornamental craftsmanship were particularly celebrated.
The upper section rises into an elaborate openwork crest, with opposing scrolls forming an elegant silhouette. Larger outward-sweeping iron scrolls extend from either side, giving the fireguard a distinctive profile and additional decorative presence.
Across the main body, an intricate pattern of curved ironwork sits in front of a fine metal mesh panel, providing a screen while allowing the detailed craftsmanship to remain clearly visible.
The shaped framework is supported by scrolling iron feet extending forwards and backwards, creating a freestanding structure. Its dark metal finish complements the decorative detailing, with subtle variations in tone that enhance the character of the ironwork.
Measuring 93 cm wide and 70 cm high, this substantial antique fireguard would make an attractive addition to a country house drawing room, traditional sitting room or period fireplace.
The fireguard has been thoroughly cleaned and treated for rust in our Shackleton Fox workshop, preserving its decorative character and original-style dark iron finish.
The metalwork retains minor surface marks, variations in finish and traces of historic oxidation consistent with age and previous use.
The decorative scrollwork, metal mesh and supporting feet present attractively, with the character expected of an older fireside piece.
