A striking and highly decorative pair of 18th-century Austrian Baroque putti, beautifully sculpted in limewood with expressive faces, rounded forms, and animated poses that embody the theatricality and movement of the Baroque period.
Expertly hand-carved, these charming cherubs would originally have formed part of a larger ecclesiastical or architectural decorative scheme, most likely adorning an altar, retable, tabernacle, or church interior. Retaining remnants of their original polychrome decoration, the figures offer a fascinating glimpse into the richly painted appearance they would once have possessed. Centuries of age and handling have mellowed the surface, creating a wonderful patina that highlights both the quality of the carving and the warmth of the limewood beneath.

Condition is consistent with age and historical use. Both figures have lost their original arms over time, a common occurrence with architectural carvings of this nature. One cherub displays a natural age-related split to the reverse, while the other shows evidence of historic woodworm activity. Both figures have been professionally treated and are stable for display. The surviving traces of original polychrome decoration add greatly to their authenticity, character, and decorative appeal.
