An imposing and finely made table lamp in the neoclassical manner, dating to the late 19th century, circa 1880. Originally an oil lamp, this impressive piece has since been expertly converted for electricity, while retaining all the elegance of its original form.
The lamp is constructed with a substantial square stepped plinth base, rising through a moulded platform that provides both architectural weight and visual stability. From this base springs a reeded black column, its dark lacquered or ebonised finish contrasting beautifully with the polished brass mounts. The column is surmounted by a finely cast Corinthian capital, richly detailed with scrolling volutes and crisp acanthus leaves — a direct reference to the grandeur of classical antiquity.
The Corinthian order, celebrated since the architecture of ancient Greece and Rome, became a favourite motif in neoclassical decorative arts of the 18th and 19th centuries. Its adoption in lighting design during the Victorian period symbolised refinement, permanence, and intellectual taste. This lamp, with its commanding proportions and refined details, epitomises the late Victorian enthusiasm for classical revivalism.
The overall form is both decorative and functional, balancing architectural authority with elegance. Its bold contrast between the gilded brass and the darkened central shaft makes it a striking yet versatile piece, easily harmonising with both traditional and modern interiors.
This lamp represents the highest quality of Victorian craftsmanship, embodying both historical resonance and decorative appeal. Its classical proportions and original detailing make it not only a functional lamp but also a statement piece of neoclassical design.
This lamp is in excellent antique condition, with a rich patina to the brass consistent with age and careful use. The stepped plinth base, reeded black column, and finely cast Corinthian capital remain crisp and well-defined, with no losses or damage.
The lamp has been professionally rewired to current UK standards with period-style braided cable and has been fully PAT tested and inspected, ensuring it is safe and ready for immediate use.
