French, Circa 1900
A superb and highly decorative hand-forged wrought iron stick or umbrella stand, retaining its original gilded surface and rich, time-worn patina. The craftsmanship is distinctly French, displaying a refined sense of proportion and decorative flair, with a beautifully twisted central stem rising from a circular moulded base incorporating a well-formed drip tray of good depth.
The upper section is adorned with graceful scrolled supports and a circular carrying ring, each element individually forged and finished by hand. The soft, mellow gilding has matured beautifully over time, enhancing the sculptural quality and lending a warm luminosity to the piece.
Equally practical and decorative, this stand would have originally graced a stylish Parisian entrance hall, serving as a receptacle for walking sticks or umbrellas. Today it stands as a fine testament to the elegance and artistry of early 20th-century French decorative ironwork.
Condition Report
The stand has been carefully cleaned and sympathetically conserved. The base and drip tray have been professionally treated to ensure stability and protection while preserving the integrity of the original metalwork and gilded surface. Minor, age-related wear to the gilding consistent with use, presenting a warm and even patina throughout. Overall, the piece is in excellent and fully usable condition.
