Early 20th Century English Solid Elm Library Steps with Handrail

A handsome and unusually substantial set of early 20th century English library steps, beautifully constructed from solid elm.

The steps feature three broad, graduated treads rising to an upper platform, accompanied by an elegant and unusually tall sweeping handrail. The handrail is supported by a series of upright and shaped braces, creating a particularly attractive architectural silhouette.

Decorative pierced fretwork panels have been incorporated throughout the lower framework and sides, while shaped brackets beneath the steps add further detail. These elements elevate what was fundamentally a practical piece of library furniture into something considerably more decorative.

The solid elm has developed a wonderful warm, rich colour and attractive surface patina through generations of use. Its distinctive grain remains visible throughout and contributes greatly to the character of the piece.

Standing an impressive 159 cm high, these have considerably more presence than smaller sets of library steps. They would be particularly suited to a traditional library, study or country-house interior, positioned alongside tall bookcases or cabinetry.

Today, they also make an interesting decorative and sculptural piece of furniture in their own right — combining craftsmanship, utility and an unmistakably English country-house aesthetic.

History

Library steps developed as a practical response to the increasingly tall bookcases and fitted shelving found within private libraries and studies.

By the 19th and early 20th centuries, numerous forms had evolved, ranging from ingenious metamorphic chairs and tables to freestanding sets of steps specifically designed for accessing upper shelves.

Dating from the early 20th century, this example continues that tradition of purpose-made library furniture. Its substantial construction reflects its practical origins, while the pierced fretwork, shaped supports and sweeping handrail demonstrate that consideration was also given to its appearance within a domestic interior.

Elm was particularly well suited to practical furniture because of its toughness and distinctive interlocking grain. With age, it develops the warm colour and pronounced character so evident in this example.

Dealer's Comments

These are a particularly attractive set of library steps, combining genuine practicality with considerable decorative presence.

We especially like the unusually tall, sweeping handrail and the pierced fretwork incorporated throughout the frame. Viewed from the side, the steps have an almost architectural quality that makes them interesting from several angles.

The elm is another particularly appealing feature, having developed a wonderfully warm colour and character through age and use.

A lovely piece for a library or study, but equally effective as an unusual piece of country-house furniture within a contemporary interior.

Condition Report

This set of early 20th century library steps is in good condition, with wear consistent with age and use.

The solid elm displays an attractive established patina with expected surface marks, scratches, knocks, variations in colour and other signs of use associated with a functional piece of furniture of this age.

Minor age-related movement and imperfections should be expected in antique timber furniture and form part of the character and history of the piece.

Please refer to the photographs for further details, as these form an important part of the condition report.

Workshop Conservation & Preparation

Every item offered by Shackleton Fox is carefully inspected, prepared, and where necessary conserved within our workshop prior to sale.

As heritage craftsmen and antique specialists, we believe in preserving the authenticity and integrity of each piece. Original finishes, patina, wear, and signs of age are retained wherever possible, as these elements contribute to both character and historical significance.

When restoration, rewiring, repairs, or conservation work is required, it is undertaken sympathetically using traditional techniques and materials appropriate to the period of the piece. Our philosophy is one of careful stewardship rather than unnecessary restoration, ensuring antiques remain both functional and historically respectful.

The result is a collection of pieces that have been thoughtfully prepared, allowing future owners to enjoy them with confidence while preserving their unique story and character.
