Additional Information
An Ornate 19th-Century French Bronze 'Lion Masque' Fireside Stick Stand, c. 1880
France, circa 1880

A magnificent and richly cast late 19th-century bronze stick stand, exhibiting the sculptural density and technical virtuosity of high-tier French decorative bronzework. This piece is distinguished by its profusion of classical zoomorphic detail and a commanding presence that elevates it from a functional fireside accessory to a work of interior sculpture.

The stand features:

  • Iconic Lion Imagery: A powerful central Lion Masque dominates the high-relief circular drip tray, further anchored by four flanking masques at the perimeter. The upper support brackets are centered by two additional, boldly sculpted lion heads with flowing manes.

  • Exceptional Casting: The bronze exhibits deep, crisp chasing across the scrolling acanthus and vine-work. The central column is uniquely fluted and enriched with engraved foliage, rising to a circular support divided for canes, umbrellas, or fire tools.

  • Patination: It retains a superb, naturally aged chocolate-brown patina with subtle warm highlights on the high-relief elements, typical of 19th-century Parisian foundries.

  • Stability & Form: Resting on four elaborate scrolled feet, the piece is both structurally sound and visually balanced, standing significantly taller than average examples at 81 cm.

Condition Report

Recently cleaned and presented in very good condition. The bronze retains a rich, even patination with minor wear consistent with age. The underside has been professionally treated and rust-protected to ensure stability and preservation. All elements are original, secure, and structurally sound, with no losses or repairs.
