Exquisite French 19th Century Hand Painted Porcelain Table Lamp

A truly exquisite 19th-century French porcelain table lamp, masterfully painted with a serene and captivating landscape scene. This urn-form vase, now elegantly converted, exemplifies the high artistry and decorative opulence of the period, likely emanating from a prestigious Parisian atelier or a renowned manufactory such as Sèvres or Limoges.

The central body showcases a remarkably detailed, hand-painted monochrome sepia and grisaille landscape, depicting a solitary, gnarled tree dominating a gentle river vista. The muted palette, punctuated by subtle washes of blue and ochre, lends an air of sophisticated melancholy and depth, a hallmark of fine Continental decorative arts from this era.

The porcelain vase is beautifully mounted with highly ornate gilt-bronze (ormolu) elements. The lamp is crowned by a flared, rich oxblood or café-au-lait glaze neck, harmoniously complementing the deep, warm tones of the landscape. The vase is secured to a finely cast, stepped bronze base featuring classical relief detailing, providing a solid and aesthetically pleasing foundation.

France, 19th Century (likely Napoleon III period, c. 1860–1880).

While unmarked, the quality of the porcelain, the finesse of the painting, and the style of the gilt-bronze mounts suggest a manufacture of the highest calibre, potentially associated with firms that supplied the luxury market in Paris, such as Jacob Petit or pieces produced à la façon de Sèvres or Paris porcelain.

Condition Report

Excellent overall condition. The hand-painted landscape decoration is vibrant and complete, with minimal to no loss. The body is free from chips, cracks, or restoration. Minor, age-appropriate glaze crazing may be present, commensurate with 19th-century porcelain.

The gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts are in very good order. The gilding retains a substantial amount of its original richness, with a pleasing, warm patina developed over time. The mounts are structurally sound and firmly secure the vase to the base.

Professionally converted into a table lamp. Fitted with a modern UK-specification B22 brass lamp holder and new braided silk-flex cable. PAT Inspected
