Mid-Century Italian Florentine Gilt Tole Six-Light Flush Mount Ceiling Light, c.1960

A wonderfully decorative Mid-Century Italian Florentine gilt tole ceiling light, dating to circa 1960, formed as an exuberant arrangement of overlapping acanthus and foliate leaves and fitted with six concealed light fittings.

Designed to sit close to the ceiling, the light has a remarkably sculptural appearance despite its compact proportions. Layers of hand-formed gilt metal foliage radiate from the centre in an almost floral composition, with deeply modelled leaves overlapping one another to create considerable depth and movement.

The six bulbs are cleverly concealed amongst the foliage, allowing light to emerge through and between the leaves rather than dominating the design. When illuminated, the richly gilded surfaces act as reflectors, creating a warm golden glow across the surrounding metalwork.

The combination of extravagant botanical decoration, gilt finish and low-profile construction is characteristic of Florentine lighting produced in Italy during the mid-20th century, particularly pieces associated with the Hollywood Regency aesthetic. Comparable six-light Florentine fittings are documented with Banci Firenze and other Italian manufacturers of the period.

Florentine Gilt Tole Decoration

The ceiling light is constructed from numerous individually formed metal leaves arranged in concentric layers.

Large scrolling acanthus leaves form the principal structure, interspersed with smaller serrated leaves and delicate branching foliage. Each element has been shaped and detailed to give the composition a lively naturalistic quality.

At the centre is a pierced domed canopy decorated with further acanthus leaves and surmounted by a simple gilt spherical finial.

The openwork construction allows glimpses through the layers of foliage, giving the relatively small fitting an impressive sense of depth.

The entire visible composition is finished in a warm aged gold, with subtle variation and patination across the surface.

Six-Light Arrangement

Hidden amongst the foliage are six small light fittings, positioned radially around the centre.

Rather than using exposed conventional bulbs, the small bulbs nestle amongst the leaves so that the decorative metalwork remains the principal visual feature.

This arrangement is particularly effective when illuminated: light passes through the openings between the leaves and reflects against the gilt surfaces, producing a warm and atmospheric glow.

Comparable Italian Florentine ceiling lights were specifically produced with six small E14 light points concealed within their gilt foliage.

Italian Florentine Design

The design belongs to the tradition of Florentine toleware lighting, in which thin metal was cut, pressed and shaped into elaborate botanical forms before being gilded or painted.

During the 1950s and 1960s, Italian manufacturers developed these traditional Florentine techniques into increasingly theatrical decorative lighting. Acanthus leaves, flowers and radiating foliage became particularly characteristic motifs.

The resulting pieces are now closely associated with both Italian Mid-Century design and Hollywood Regency interiors.

The present light relates closely to documented Italian examples of the period, including designs produced by Banci Firenze, although no maker's mark is visible and the piece is therefore catalogued without a specific maker attribution. Documented Banci examples from circa 1960 employ the same combination of gilt metal, acanthus foliage and concealed multiple light sources.

Low-Profile Design

At only 11 cm / 4.3 inches high, the fitting sits remarkably close to the ceiling.

This makes it particularly useful for rooms where a chandelier or conventional pendant would hang too low, while still providing the decorative impact of a much larger piece of lighting.

Its compact 22 cm / 8.7 inch width also makes it particularly suitable for an entrance hall, dressing room, bedroom, landing, powder room or smaller reception space.

It could equally be used in multiples along a hallway or within a larger interior scheme.

Condition

Presented in good Mid-Century condition, with age-related wear and patination consistent with a decorative Italian light dating from circa 1960.

The gilt finish displays areas of rubbing, tonal variation, oxidation and surface marking, particularly around the projecting leaves and edges. These variations give the light an attractive aged appearance and prevent the gilding from appearing overly bright or newly restored.

The individual leaves are deliberately irregular and three-dimensional, with minor bends, small distortions and age-related imperfections visible amongst the more delicate foliage.

Decorative Appeal

This is an unusually compact yet highly decorative piece of Italian Mid-Century lighting.

The dense arrangement of gilded foliage creates the impression of a golden botanical sculpture spreading across the ceiling, while the six concealed bulbs provide significantly more illumination than might be expected from a fitting of this size.

Its combination of Florentine craftsmanship, Hollywood Regency glamour and practical low-profile proportions makes it particularly versatile for both period and contemporary interiors.
