A refined and highly decorative pair of French faience table lamps by the celebrated Lunéville manufactory, Keller & Guérin, stamped to the base. Elegantly proportioned, each lamp is richly decorated with polychrome chinoiserie-inspired scenes, featuring birds, exotic foliage, pagodas and fantastical landscapes, all painted with remarkable detail and vibrancy.
The cylindrical ceramic bodies are mounted on finely cast gilt metal bases with ornate scrolling feet, complemented by matching gilt metal collars and lampholders. The soft ivory ground provides a perfect foil for the colourful hand-painted decoration, while the gilded mounts add a sense of luxury and balance.
Keller & Guérin of Lunéville were among the most important French ceramic producers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, renowned for their technical excellence and artistic designs. Their work was heavily influenced by the 18th-century tradition of chinoiserie, which experienced a strong revival during the Belle Époque, making pieces such as these both fashionable and highly sought after.
These lamps combine artistic craftsmanship with timeless decorative appeal and would sit beautifully in both classical and eclectic interiors.
Perfect bedside lamps
The Lunéville faience works, operated by Keller & Guérin, played a pivotal role in the revival of French decorative ceramics during the late 19th century. Drawing inspiration from Rococo and Orientalist sources, their wares were highly prized both in France and internationally. These lamps reflect that period’s fascination with exoticism, craftsmanship and refined domestic luxury.
“A superb and elegant pair with all the hallmarks of quality Lunéville production. The painting is crisp and lively, the colours beautifully preserved, and the overall effect is wonderfully decorative. Pairs of lamps by Keller & Guérin are increasingly difficult to find, particularly in such fine condition.”
Both lamps are in excellent condition, showing only minimal signs of age and use. The ceramic bodies are free from cracks, chips or restoration, and the hand-painted decoration remains vibrant and well-defined throughout. The gilt metal bases and fittings are sound, with light surface wear and gentle rubbing to the gilding, consistent with age. The bases are sligtly different which gives them a minimal difference in height.
The lamps have been fully rewired and PAT-tested using high-quality British-made components, and are ready for use. The lampholders and fittings are secure and operate correctly. Overall, this is a very well-preserved and attractive matching pair.
