A refined Art Nouveau wall light in solid brass, distinguished by its flowing, sculptural form and original holophane rib glass shade. The design is characterised by an elegant continuity of line, from the richly worked circular backplate through the articulated arm to the softly flared shade, reflecting the Art Nouveau ideal of organic form integrated with function.
The cast brass backplate is ornamented with subtle foliate relief, integral to the structure rather than applied, a key characteristic of Art Nouveau decorative philosophy. The adjustable arm and pivoting gallery demonstrate the period’s embrace of modernity and practicality, allowing the light to be precisely directed for use as a picture or task light.
The fluted bell-shaped glass shade, with its gently beaded rim, is entirely consistent with turn-of-the-century Art Nouveau lighting, designed to diffuse light evenly and create a warm, atmospheric glow rather than sharp brilliance. The pierced brass gallery and original thumb screws further confirm its early electric origin.
Produced during the height of the Art Nouveau movement, this wall light exemplifies the period’s departure from historic revival styles in favor of fluid line, naturalistic ornament, and the unification of beauty and utility. Lighting was regarded as an essential architectural and decorative element, and pieces such as this were designed to function as sculptural accents within refined interiors.
This is a particularly fine and restrained example of Art Nouveau lighting, notable for its elegant proportions and complete originality. The design achieves a rare balance of decorative presence and functional sophistication. Subtle, architecturally focused Art Nouveau lighting of this quality is increasingly difficult to find and is highly sought after by discerning collectors and interior designers alike.
Very good antique condition. The brass retains an attractive warm patina with minor surface wear consistent with age. The glass shade is in excellent condition with no visible chips or cracks. Rewired for modern use while preserving original components.
