An exceptional and beautifully matched pair of 19th-century Victorian oak footstools, exhibiting the powerful architectural forms of the Gothic Revival movement. These stools are of outstanding, substantial quality, boasting a lovely heavy weight that immediately signals their premium timber and construction.
The structural wooden bases present a masterclass in the design language popularised by the legendary architect A.W.N. Pugin. The solid oak aprons are beautifully carved with deeply stylized medieval church architecture motifs. This historic look is brilliantly juxtaposed against a fresh layer of luxury upholstery in a classic William Morris style textile.
While the structural wood look backs to early medieval Gothic forms, the fabric looks forward to the late Victorian Arts & Crafts movement. This artistic dialogue between revival periods is highly characteristic of elite Victorian domestic furniture. It makes this symmetrical pair an incredibly stylish, grounding addition to a grand fireplace hearth, a bedroom suite, or an eclectic living space.

Augustus Welby Northmoremore (A.W.N.) Pugin fundamentally redefined 19th-century British design by arguing that Gothic architecture was the pinnacle of honest craftsmanship. His furniture designs emphasized bold, structural integrity, visible joinery, and medieval decorative motifs. By the late Victorian era, these robust Gothic bases were frequently paired with the flowing, organic botanical textiles of William Morris's Arts & Crafts movement. Today, pairs of heavy, authentic Pugin-esque stools with purely carved aprons are incredibly scarce and highly prized by collectors for their striking graphic silhouettes.

This pair of footstools has been meticulously inspected, repaired and prepared by Alex Webster Restoration in Conwy.
The solid oak bases are structurally rock-solid and in excellent antique condition. They display a gorgeous, authentic deep colour and natural wear patterns consistent with age, which we have carefully preserved.
Fully and professionally reupholstered from the frame up. They feature brand-new, premium-grade foam/fillings and are finished in a heavy, high-end William Morris style woven fabric. The upholstery work has been executed to the highest master craftsman standards, ensuring they are perfectly clean, firm, and ready for decades of domestic enjoyment.
