Baroque is an elaborate European artistic and architectural style that flourished between the early seventeenth and mid-eighteenth centuries. Originating in Italy before spreading across Europe, Baroque design is characterised by grandeur, movement, rich ornamentation and dramatic contrasts of light and shadow. Furniture, lighting and decorative arts from the period often feature bold carving, gilding, scrolling acanthus leaves, cherubs and architectural forms. Antique Baroque pieces remain highly prized for their theatrical presence, exceptional craftsmanship and timeless elegance.
