Ebonised Wood is timber that has been stained, dyed or chemically treated to imitate the appearance of ebony. Popular from the seventeenth century onwards, particularly during the Victorian Aesthetic Movement, ebonising allowed cabinet makers to achieve the dramatic appearance of ebony at a more affordable cost. Antique ebonised furniture often features gilt decoration, painted panels or inlaid details, making it highly decorative and distinctive. *Related Terms*\ Aesthetic Movement, Ebony, Ebonised Furniture, Japanning, Victorian Furniture.
