Gilt Composition refers to decorative mouldings formed from composition material---a mixture of chalk, glue, resin and oils---and finished with gold leaf or gilt paint. Commonly used on mirrors, picture frames and furniture from the eighteenth century onwards, gilt composition allowed intricate ornament to be produced more economically than carved wood.
