Giltwood Identification involves recognising genuine carved and gilded wooden objects by assessing their construction, carving quality, gilding techniques and signs of age. Original giltwood often features hand-carved timber, layers of gesso and bole beneath genuine gold leaf, with natural wear revealing centuries of use. Correct identification helps distinguish authentic period pieces from later reproductions or modern decorative finishes.
