A Horizontal Sundial is a timekeeping instrument with a flat, horizontal dial plate marked with hour lines and a raised gnomon that casts a shadow to indicate the time. Commonly crafted from brass, bronze or stone, horizontal sundials became popular features in formal gardens and country estates from the seventeenth century onwards. Antique examples are valued for both their scientific significance and decorative appeal.
