Signed by the Spanish maker Puigdemont, this charger combines traditional craftsmanship with expressive artistic design.

History

Spanish ceramic workshops have long been celebrated for producing vibrant hand-painted earthenware inspired by the country's coastal landscapes, fishing traditions and Mediterranean lifestyle.

Puigdemont became recognised for creating decorative ceramics featuring marine life, botanical subjects and traditional Spanish motifs. Their work reflects the enduring influence of handcrafted pottery, where each piece was individually painted, ensuring subtle variations and unique character.

Large decorative chargers such as this were designed to be displayed on walls or dressers, bringing warmth and colour into the home.

Craftsmanship

Hand-thrown in terracotta and individually hand-painted, this impressive charger demonstrates the skill of traditional Spanish ceramic production.

The lobster is rendered in raised relief with beautifully detailed shell, claws and antennae, while the surrounding reeds and shoreline are painted in rich green, brown and cream glazes. The glossy finish enhances the depth and texture of the decoration.

The reverse bears the impressed signature of Puigdemont, confirming its Spanish origin.

Design & Decorative Appeal

This impressive charger celebrates one of the Mediterranean's most iconic crustaceans in bold, sculptural form.

Its generous proportions and lively composition make it an ideal decorative focal point. The warm natural tones complement both traditional country homes and contemporary interiors, while the marine theme lends itself perfectly to kitchens, dining rooms and coastal properties.

Whether displayed individually or alongside other Mediterranean ceramics, it offers exceptional visual impact.

Condition Report

Presented in very good vintage condition.

The hand-painted glazes remain vibrant with an attractive glossy finish.

There is one very small frit to the reverse foot rim, visible in the photographs, which does not affect display.

Minor firing imperfections and light age-related wear are entirely consistent with traditional handmade pottery.

Overall, this charger displays beautifully and remains in excellent decorative condition.

Workshop Conservation & Preparation

Every item offered by Shackleton Fox is carefully inspected, prepared, and where necessary conserved within our workshop prior to sale.

As heritage craftsmen and antique specialists, we believe in preserving the authenticity and integrity of each piece. Original finishes, patina, wear, and signs of age are retained wherever possible, as these elements contribute to both character and historical significance.

When restoration, rewiring, repairs, or conservation work is required, it is undertaken sympathetically using traditional techniques and materials appropriate to the period of the piece. Our philosophy is one of careful stewardship rather than unnecessary restoration, ensuring antiques remain both functional and historically respectful.

The result is a collection of pieces that have been thoughtfully prepared, allowing future owners to enjoy them with confidence while preserving their unique story and character.
