Regency Mahogany Library Steps with Leather Treads & Concealed Storage, c.1820

A particularly handsome and ingenious set of English Regency mahogany library steps, dating to the early 19th century and combining elegant cabinetmaking with the practical, space-saving design so characteristic of Regency furniture.

Constructed as three graduated steps, the piece has a wonderful architectural quality, with beautifully figured mahogany panels, moulded edges and a rich, warm colour developed over more than two centuries.

Each of the three treads is inset with tooled leather, decorated with a gilt scrolling foliate border. The aged leather has been retained, displaying the surface character, gentle wear and patination that give the piece such authenticity.

Beyond their sculptural appearance, the steps incorporate a series of cleverly concealed compartments. The middle section pulls forward and opens to reveal a substantial storage compartment, while the upper section incorporates a concealed door, providing further discreet storage within the structure.

The lowest step is raised on four beautifully proportioned turned and tapering Regency legs, giving what could otherwise have been a relatively substantial piece of furniture a surprisingly light and elegant appearance.

Today these steps are equally compelling as a decorative piece of furniture. Alongside their original purpose, the different levels provide wonderful surfaces for books, objects, plants or a lamp, while the hidden compartments add an appealing element of discovery.

The steps have been carefully renovated and polished, preserving their age and character while ensuring that the mahogany presents beautifully.

Historical Context

Library steps became an important piece of specialist furniture within the libraries of substantial British houses during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

As private libraries grew and bookcases became increasingly tall, cabinetmakers developed ingenious forms of steps and library furniture that could remain within the room rather than being purely utilitarian objects.

During the Regency period, functionality was frequently combined with sophisticated cabinetmaking. Library steps were consequently produced in numerous forms, ranging from simple folding steps to elaborate pieces incorporating drawers, compartments and concealed storage.

This example is particularly appealing because the graduated architectural form disguises a surprisingly practical interior. The use of rich mahogany, tooled leather and slender turned legs gives the piece the refinement expected of furniture intended for a well-appointed library or study.

Acquired in the United Kingdom.

The steps have subsequently undergone sympathetic renovation and polishing, undertaken with the support of Alex Webster of Colwyn Bay, Wales, with whom Shackleton Fox works on larger furniture restoration projects requiring specialist attention.

Dealer's Comments

These are a particularly charming example of Regency library furniture and a piece that reveals considerably more as you explore it.

We especially like the contrast between the substantial stepped form and the unusually elegant legs, which lift the entire piece from the floor and give it a much lighter appearance.

The concealed storage is another wonderful feature. At first glance the piece appears simply to be a beautifully made set of library steps, but the pull-out middle section and secret upper door reveal the ingenuity of its construction.

The old leather treads are equally important to its character. Their wear and patination sit beautifully against the polished mahogany and retain the sense of age that we always try to preserve when undertaking restoration.

While entirely at home beside a bookcase in a library or study, we could equally see these being used decoratively, layered with books and collected objects in a country-house interior.

Restoration

The steps have undergone sympathetic renovation and polishing to improve their presentation and preserve them for continued use.

The work was undertaken with specialist support from Alex Webster, Colwyn Bay, Wales, who works with Shackleton Fox on larger furniture projects requiring additional restoration expertise.

The intention throughout has been conservation rather than over-restoration, retaining the aged surface, patination and evidence of use that form an important part of the piece's history.

Condition Report

In good antique condition consistent with a piece dating from the early 19th century.

The mahogany displays expected marks, variations in colour, old surface wear and minor imperfections associated with age and use. The piece has been sympathetically renovated and polished while retaining its established patina.

The leather treads display age-related wear, surface marking, creasing and losses to the finish, all contributing to their attractive aged appearance. The gilt-tooled decoration remains clearly visible.

The concealed compartments and moving sections are present and functional.

As with all antique furniture of this age, evidence of historic construction, movement and previous maintenance should be expected. Please refer closely to the photographs, which form an important part of the condition report.
