THE SHACKLETON FOX ENCYCLOPAEDIA

Country House Interiors

Country house interiors are the furnished rooms of the great and lesser landed houses of Britain and Ireland, and the decorative style that has grown from them. They are characterised by an accumulation of furniture, pictures, textiles and objects acquired over generations, arranged with comfort and continuity rather than strict period correctness.

The principal rooms typically included an entrance hall, saloon, drawing room, dining room, library and long gallery, each with its own furniture and character, alongside bedrooms, dressing rooms and extensive service quarters. Georgian architects such as William Kent and Robert Adam designed rooms and furniture as unified schemes, while later owners added Victorian comforts, family portraits, sporting pictures and souvenirs of travel. In the twentieth century decorators such as Nancy Lancaster and John Fowler refined the idea of English country house style, celebrating faded chintz, worn rugs, mixed periods and a lived-in ease. The look remains enormously influential. Pieces with country house provenance, sale labels or inventory marks attract particular interest, and the style rewards mixing quality antiques of different dates with generous upholstery and good lighting.
