THE SHACKLETON FOX ENCYCLOPAEDIA

Sporting Antiques

Sporting antiques are objects associated with sports, games and field pursuits, collected for their history, craftsmanship and decorative appeal. The field includes equipment such as fishing rods and reels, golf clubs and balls, cricket bats, tennis rackets, croquet sets and billiard cues, together with trophies, medals, prints, ceramics and furniture connected with sport.

Britain played a central role in the codification of many modern sports during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and its makers produced fine equipment that is now keenly collected. Hunting, shooting and fishing generated a particularly rich material culture in country houses, from game boxes, cartridge magazines and gun cases to brass fishing reels by makers such as Hardy and taxidermy trophies. Early golf clubs with hand-forged iron heads and wooden shafts, leather footballs and early tennis rackets are also popular. Collectors look for maker's marks, original condition, provenance linking items to notable sportsmen or clubs, and rarity of form. Sporting antiques bring personality to boot rooms, studies, gun rooms and clubhouses, and are often bought by enthusiasts as much for their connection with a favourite pastime as for their value.
