THE SHACKLETON FOX ENCYCLOPAEDIA

Hans Wegner

Hans Wegner was a Danish furniture designer, one of the leading figures of twentieth-century Danish Modern design, best known for his chairs. Trained as a cabinetmaker, he combined deep knowledge of timber and joinery with a sculptural sense of form, producing hundreds of chair designs over a long career.

Wegner's best-known designs include the Wishbone or Y chair, with its curved back rail and paper-cord seat, made by Carl Hansen & Søn; the Round Chair, often simply called The Chair, produced by Johannes Hansen; the Peacock Chair, inspired by the Windsor chair; and the Shell Chair and Papa Bear Chair. Many drew on historic types such as Chinese horseshoe-back chairs and English Windsors, refined into clean, organic lines. His work was produced in oak, teak, ash and other woods, often with oiled or soaped finishes. Collectors look for genuine manufacturers' labels, stamps or brands, early production examples, original upholstery or cord seats and sound joints. Because many designs remain in production, age and maker's marks matter greatly to value, and vintage examples sit as naturally in period interiors as in modern ones.
