A rare and imposing 18th-century Italian carved wood candle holder of substantial scale. This triangular-form torchère is decorated in a rich polychrome finish and supported by three bold, scrolling claw feet. Each of the three primary panels features a high-relief carving of a crowned lion rampant clutching a dagger—a powerful heraldic symbol of nobility and martial strength.
The piece retains a magnificent "dry" antique patina, with layers of historical pigment and gesso visible throughout. Originally designed for a grand ecclesiastical setting or an aristocratic palazzo, its height and sculptural silhouette make it an exceptional floor or console-standing statement piece. A rare find for the collector of early Italian vernacular carving.
This candle holder is in good condition, as indicated by the accompanying images.
