Antique French Gilt Bronze Cherub Table Lamp with Glass Roses – Circa Late 19th Century

This exquisite antique table lamp is a stunning example of late 19th-century French decorative art, embodying the opulence and romanticism of the Belle Époque period. Crafted in gilt bronze, the lamp features a beautifully cast cherub — a symbol of innocence and divine love in classical art — gracefully poised with arms uplifted, supporting a lavish bouquet of flowers.

The bouquet functions as the lamp’s light source, adorned with three delicate, hand-blown glass rose shades. Each rose is shaped to mimic the soft, unfurling petals of a real flower, offering a warm and diffused glow when illuminated. Surrounding the bouquet are gilded bronze leaves and berries, adding rich texture and detail to the floral motif.

The cherub stands on an ornately pierced base, showcasing masterful bronze craftsmanship with its finely cut-out details and scrolling design. This openwork foundation not only reflects the skill of the artisan but also lightens the visual weight of the piece, giving it a sense of graceful airiness.

Such lamps were often found in the salons and boudoirs of Parisian homes during the turn of the century, reflecting the era’s fascination with nature, light, and mythological themes. Today, this piece stands as both a functional lamp and a collectible objet d’art — a glowing tribute to the golden age of French design.

Condition Report

This antique French gilt bronze cherub table lamp is in very good condition, consistent with its age (circa 1880–1900). The bronze retains its original gilded finish with only minor age-appropriate wear, enhancing its authentic patina.

The lamp has been fully rewired to meet modern UK electrical safety standards using British-made components, and it has undergone a full PAT (Portable Appliance Test) inspection for safe domestic use in the UK.

The three hand-blown glass rose shades are original and remain structurally sound. Shades show minor chips to the petal edges, which are common with antique glass of this type and do not detract from the overall beauty or function of the lamp.

Overall, this piece is ready for immediate use and display, offering both historical charm and modern safety.
