Alder wood is a fine-grained hardwood native to Europe and North America. Although softer than oak or walnut, it has long been valued by cabinetmakers for its smooth texture, stability and ease of carving. Freshly cut alder has a pale appearance that gradually develops into a warm reddish-brown tone with age. It has been used in furniture making, turned objects and decorative carvings since the medieval period.
