THE SHACKLETON FOX ENCYCLOPAEDIA

Architectural Antiques

Architectural antiques are salvaged elements and fittings from historic buildings, preserved for reuse in homes, gardens and commercial interiors. They include fireplaces and fire surrounds, doors, panelling, staircases, columns, corbels, windows, stained glass, floor tiles, radiators, ironwork, garden statuary and decorative carvings.

The trade grew substantially during the twentieth century as historic houses, churches, mills and commercial buildings were demolished or converted, and dealers recognised the value of rescuing well-made original features. Architectural antiques offer authentic character, high-quality materials and craftsmanship that are difficult and expensive to reproduce, and reusing them is an inherently sustainable choice. When buying, it is important to consider dimensions, condition, completeness and the practicalities of installation, as large items may require specialist fitting. Reputable dealers should be able to give details of origin and confirm that items were legitimately removed, particularly for pieces from listed buildings or churches.
