Basalt Ware is a fine, unglazed black stoneware first perfected by Josiah Wedgwood during the eighteenth century. Produced using a refined black clay body, basalt ware was inspired by Classical sculpture and became popular for busts, vases, tea wares and decorative objects. Its smooth matte finish and elegant neoclassical styling continue to make antique basalt ware highly desirable among collectors.
