Celluloid is one of the earliest commercially successful plastics, developed during the nineteenth century as an alternative to ivory, tortoiseshell and horn. Easily moulded and capable of imitating a wide variety of natural materials, celluloid was widely used for jewellery, dressing table accessories, photograph frames, handles and decorative objects. Antique celluloid is now collected for its historical significance and distinctive appearance.
