THE SHACKLETON FOX ENCYCLOPAEDIA

Collecting

Collecting is the activity of seeking out, acquiring and keeping objects of a particular kind for their beauty, history, rarity or personal meaning. In the context of British antiques it ranges from assembling a focused group of Georgian drinking glasses or Staffordshire figures to furnishing an entire house with period pieces chosen for character and quality.

The habit has deep roots in Britain, from the cabinets of curiosities of the seventeenth century and the Grand Tour purchases of Georgian aristocrats to the Victorian enthusiasm for ceramics, natural history and old oak. Today collectors buy from dealers, auction houses, fairs and online platforms. Experienced collectors usually advise learning through handling as many pieces as possible, buying the best example affordable rather than several weaker ones, and paying close attention to condition, originality, marks and provenance. Keeping records of purchases, receipts and any history attached to an object adds to its long-term interest and value. A collection is also shaped by how it is displayed and cared for, with stable humidity, protection from strong sunlight and careful handling all helping to preserve objects for the next generation.
