Damascene is a decorative metalworking technique in which fine threads or sheets of gold and silver are inlaid into a darkened steel or iron surface to create intricate patterns and designs. Originating in the Middle East and later refined in Spain and Japan, damascene work became highly prized during the nineteenth century for jewellery, boxes, vases and decorative objects. Antique examples are admired for their exceptional craftsmanship and striking contrast between precious metals and the dark metal background. *Related Terms*\ Decorative Arts, Inlay, Japanese Metalwork, Mixed Metals, Toledo Ware.
