Electrical Restoration

Electrical restoration is the process of making antique and vintage light fittings, lamps and other electrical objects safe and serviceable for modern use while preserving as much of their original character as possible. It typically involves rewiring, replacing worn or unsafe components, adding earthing where needed and testing the finished piece.

Most antique lighting either predates domestic electricity or was wired with materials such as rubber-insulated cable that perish over time, so careful restoration is essential before any fitting is put back into service. A skilled restorer will dismantle the piece, clean and inspect each part, thread new cable through original arms and stems without enlarging holes unnecessarily, and fit new or reconditioned lampholders of the correct type, such as bayonet or Edison screw. Fabric-covered flex is often used to keep a period look. Earth continuity, sound insulation and secure connections are checked, and the fitting is tested, often with a portable appliance test for lamps. Good electrical restoration respects the integrity of the object, avoiding drilling, unnecessary replacement and the removal of original switches or fittings that may still be safely reused. Buyers should always ask whether a fitting has been rewired and tested.
