High Victorian refers to the richly decorative phase of the Victorian period, generally dating from the mid- to late nineteenth century. Influenced by Gothic Revival, Renaissance Revival and the Aesthetic Movement, High Victorian design is characterised by bold colours, elaborate carving, polychrome decoration, ornamental metalwork and richly furnished interiors. The style reflects the confidence, prosperity and craftsmanship of the Victorian era.
