A writing slope, also known as a writing box or writing desk, is a portable case designed to provide both storage for writing materials and a sloping surface upon which to write. Particularly popular during the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, writing slopes were used by travellers, military officers and within domestic life.
When closed, the object resembles a rectangular wooden box. Opening it reveals a fitted interior, with hinged panels forming an inclined writing surface.
