Pair of 18th Century Corinthian Column Floor Lamps, Grand Tour Architectural Pilasters

A monumental and highly decorative pair of 18th-century Corinthian column floor lamps, originally conceived as architectural pilasters and now reimagined as grand-scale interior lighting. This exceptional pair embodies the essence of Grand Tour design, combining classical architecture, historic craftsmanship and sculptural presence.

Originally part of a fixed interior architectural scheme, the columns retain a distinctive flat reverse surface, an authentic detail confirming their original placement against walls, doorways or interior structural joinery within a grand 18th-century estate.

The shafts are finished in finely executed scagliola, a traditional faux-marble technique used to replicate the appearance of rare Sienna marble. The surface displays warm, honeyed tones with naturalistic veining, enriched by an aged craquelure that adds depth and authenticity.

This subtle surface cracking is entirely stable and consistent with centuries of natural ageing, enhancing the visual complexity and historical character of the pieces.

Each column is crowned with an ornate hand-carved Corinthian capital, featuring deeply modelled acanthus leaves and classical volutes. The capitals retain their original water gilding, now softly worn to reveal warm undertones of bole beneath the gilded surface.

This layered patina creates a rich, atmospheric finish that reflects centuries of gentle wear and enhances their sculptural quality under light.

To adapt these architectural elements for interior use, each column has been professionally mounted onto substantial solid marble plinths. These provide stability, weight and visual grounding, allowing the columns to function safely and elegantly as freestanding floor lamps while preserving their classical proportions.

These columns originate from the Grand Tour period, when classical antiquity heavily influenced European interior architecture and decorative design. Architectural pilasters of this type were commonly used in grand houses, framing fireplaces, doorways and formal reception rooms.

The variation in surface finish across the columns further supports their architectural origin, revealing how they were originally integrated into a larger interior scheme.

Today, architectural fragments of this scale are highly sought after for their ability to introduce instant structure, height and historical gravitas into interiors.
