An unusual and highly decorative Edwardian brass hanging lantern, featuring its original Vaseline glass shade, distinctive geometric metalwork and an elegant pierced domed canopy. Dating to the early twentieth century, the lantern displays Arts and Crafts influences, combining traditional craftsmanship with a striking architectural design.
The cylindrical lantern is constructed with a decorative brass framework, featuring vertical and horizontal bands intersecting at prominent circular bosses. A broad projecting rim supports the domed upper canopy, which incorporates shaped ventilation openings, while the original suspension chain completes its distinctive silhouette.
Of particular interest is the original Vaseline glass shade, displaying a delicate blue-green appearance in natural light and a vivid green fluorescence when exposed to ultraviolet light. The glass retains visible manufacturing seeds, or small air bubbles, formed during the original glassmaking process. These subtle irregularities are characteristic of traditional manufacture and contribute to the lantern's individuality and historic appeal.
The lantern also bears a stamped British registered design number, provisionally read as Rd 555168, which corresponds to a design registration dating to 1910. This provides an interesting historical reference and supports its Edwardian attribution, although the precise date of manufacture remains unconfirmed.
The lantern is presented in authentic antique condition, retaining a richly aged surface with natural patination, surface wear and evidence of its long working history.
Several historic repairs are visible throughout the metalwork, particularly around the upper circular framework, including soldered or brazed joints. These earlier interventions have been retained rather than concealed and form part of the lantern's character, reflecting its continued use and preservation over time.
The original Vaseline glass retains its distinctive colour and visible manufacturing seeds, which are inherent characteristics of the glass rather than later damage.
The lantern's aged finish, historic repairs and original glass contribute to its individual appearance and decorative appeal.
