This exquisite table lamp is a study in architectural precision and late-Victorian opulence. Originally designed as a high-status oil lamp, its conversion to electricity allows its historical grandeur to be enjoyed in a modern context without losing any of its antique soul.
Architectural Grandeur: The lamp follows the strict proportions of the Corinthian order, the most ornate of the classical Greek styles. The fluted shaft leads the eye to a masterfully cast capital, bursting with crisp acanthus leaf motifs that create a play of light and shadow across the brass surface.
Materiality: Cast in heavy-gauge brass, the lamp possesses a deep, honey-gold luster. The stepped "Plinth" base is not only an aesthetic nod to Roman temples but is weighted to 4 kg, providing the substantial feel associated with premium 19th-century metalwork.
This Antique Neoclassical brass Corinthian columnar table lamp is in excellent overall condition, considering its age and historical significance. The brass body displays a rich patina, characteristic of its Victorian era craftsmanship, with minor wear and tarnish that enhance its antique charm. The intricate Corinthian capital remains intact, showcasing the stunning acanthus leaf detailing without signs of damage. The stepped square base is heavy and stable, showing no structural concerns.
Originally designed for use with oil, the lamp has been expertly converted to electricity. The conversion is functional and has been carried out thoughtfully, preserving the integrity of the original design.
