Fine Early 20th Century Reverse-Glass Gilded 'Champagne Bar' Sign

A striking and rare early 20th-century commercial reverse-glass advertising sign, expertly hand-painted with the legend "CHAMPAGNE Bar". The sign features sophisticated "verre églomisé" techniques, utilizing genuine gold and silver leaf to create a brilliant, reflective effect against a deep ebony-black ground. The glass is housed within its original, substantial mahogany cushion-moulded frame, which has acquired a rich, deep patination over the decades. Such signs were the hallmark of high-end Edwardian establishments, designed to glisten under the newly-introduced electric lighting of fashionable London hotels and oyster bars.

Reverse-glass painting, or Hinterglasmalerei, reached its commercial zenith in Britain between 1890 and 1920. Skilled sign-writers, known as 'glass gilders', would painstakingly apply the design in reverse on the back of the pane. These signs were expensive to produce and were intended to convey an atmosphere of luxury and continental sophistication, particularly for the promotion of premium French Champagnes which were the height of fashion in the pre-war era.

Dealer’s Comments

"Authentic glass signs of this quality are becoming increasingly difficult to source, as the glass often perished when old establishments were modernised. The 'crackle' effect within the gilding here is exactly what we look for—it proves the age and the use of genuine precious metal leaf rather than modern gold paint. It is a fantastic 'crossover' piece that works just as well in a contemporary home bar as it does in a serious collection of brewery or pub militaria. It possesses a wonderful graphic punch."

Condition Report

The glass is in remarkable original condition with no cracks or significant scratches. The reverse-painted ground and gilding remain largely intact with some charming, age-appropriate 'foxing' and minor lifting to the silvering, which adds to its antique authenticity.

The mahogany frame is structurally sound, showing minor surface abrasions consistent with its age and commercial history. It has been wax-polished to highlight the natural grain.

Would look great with a brass chain to hang it on the wall.
