Additional Information
Art Nouveau Adjustable Table Lamp Continental, circa 1900–1910

An elegant and finely proportioned Art Nouveau table lamp, executed in solid brass and fitted with a molded glass shade. The lamp features a slender columnar stem rising from a weighted circular base, retaining a rich, warm patina developed over more than a century. A gracefully curved brass arm supports the shade, which indicating the period’s fascination with organic form and fluid line.

The shade is of particular note: a delicately flared, hand-molded glass example with a softly undulating rim and textured surface, designed to diffuse light in a warm and atmospheric manner. The lamp retains its original adjustable mechanism, allowing the height and projection of the shade to be altered—an increasingly rare feature to find intact.

The twisted fabric-covered cord is consistent with early 20th-century examples and further enhances the lamp’s authenticity and decorative appeal.

This lamp belongs to the golden age of Art Nouveau, a movement that sought to unify beauty and function through naturalistic forms and fine craftsmanship. Lighting was considered an essential decorative element in turn-of-the-century interiors, and adjustable table lamps such as this were favored for desks, side tables, and reading rooms in both private residences and refined commercial interiors.

The combination of sculptural brasswork and art glass reflects the period’s emphasis on artisanal production and materials of lasting quality.

Dealer’s Comments

This is a beautifully restrained and highly usable Art Nouveau lamp, elegant without excess, and distinguished by its original adjustable mechanism and molded shade. Pieces of this quality, especially with such pleasing proportions and honest patina, are increasingly difficult to source. It works equally well in a traditional interior or as a sculptural accent in a contemporary setting.

Condition Report

Very good antique condition. Minor surface wear and patination consistent with age. The glass shade is in good condition with no visible chips or cracks. The lamp has been rewired for modern use while preserving its original character.
